The Georgian Dining Room
01/01

The Georgian age describes a period of roughly one hundred years in which some of the finest furniture was conjured out of the workshops of the great master craftsmen.

It came as a revolution in the interiors of well-to-do homes, quickly furnishing every room with a new sense of the practical as well as the beautiful.

Although it was an age of reason that led to an appreciation of form and proportion in design, drawing heavily on classical ideas, it also retained that incomparable flourish of the baroque.

We see the purity of line in such dining room essentials as the almost austerely formal credenza, or the restrained elegance of the sideboard. But those pieces are contrasted with the flamboyant rococo of the marquetry commode and the ribbon-like detailing in the dining chairs styled after Thomas Chippendale.
